A short film of ‘Walking Woman’

‘Walking Woman’ has many influences that give rise to her creation. Clay is an inherently and literally an earthbound material. It is heavy and particularly when wet seems to want to return to the earth….it loves to fall down, gravity operates very well on it! I was intrigued to try and make this contrary material flow, move and float forwards. I have also always been attracted to Japanese and Chinese woodcuts always enjoying the long, elegant kimonos of the woman; their tiny feet often only just emerging from the long gown.

As I build sculptures they often take on a life of their own- as did this one. The headwear purely came about as a formal and visual ‘balance’ to the figure’s dress. What it also did (without me intending it….), was to bring about a sense of strangeness and other worldliness. I like this in sculptures.

‘Walking Woman is an important sculpture to have emerged from the studio this year. I would hope it is a sculpture that over the years would continue to intrigue whoever owns it, and one that they could add their own stories to.’
